Psychiatrist or psychologist: who should I see?

Medically reviewed by Dr. Yujal Man Singh, MD (Psychiatry) · Updated 20 September 2026

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor (MBBS plus MD in psychiatry) who can diagnose mental illness, check for physical causes, prescribe medicine and give therapy. A clinical psychologist has a degree in psychology and gives assessments and talking therapy but does not prescribe. A counsellor offers supportive talking help. Many people benefit from more than one.

When to start with a psychiatrist

  • Symptoms are severe, or you cannot work, study or look after yourself
  • You have thoughts of harming yourself
  • You may need medicine, or already take it and it is not helping
  • There are physical health problems, alcohol or drug use alongside
  • You hear or see things others do not, or have very high moods
  • You want a clear diagnosis or a second opinion

When a psychologist or counsellor may be enough

For milder stress, grief, relationship problems or when you mainly want to talk things through, therapy alone is often a good start. If things do not improve, a psychiatrist can review.
